teeth whitening

My teeth are stained and they are yellow. I am currently using a teeth whitening toothpaste called Colgate whitening with micro buffers to polish the teeth. How long will it take to see results and what elses can I do to have white teeth? I dont wan’t to use any teeth whiteners/gels thingies, though. All answers will be greatfully appreaciated. Thanx! xx

Teeth contain pigment just like your skin and hair. How much pigment your teeth have determines how dark they are.

There are TWO kinds of stain:

    1) INTRINSIC, means the stain is actually IN the enamel and dentin and requires a BLEACH to lighten it. Common sources are our own natural pigment, certain pharmaceuticals like iron supplements and tetracycline, long-term use of tobacco products.

    2) EXTRINSIC, means the stain is only on the surface of the enamel and can be removed with a good toothpaste or dental cleaning. Common sources are plaque, tartar, tea, coffee, red wine, cola products and tobacco.

So you see, if your stain is INTRINSIC, you will require a bleach. To determine what kind of stain you have, see your hygienist.

If you try to remove intrinsic stain with a cleanser or brushing harder, you will only succeed in wearing your teeth out. On the same note, you cannot bleach extrinsic stain! It requires a cleanser.

To provide the very best care for your teeth, consult with your hygienist. You could be spared a lot of grief if all you need is a good professional dental cleaning. Have her teach you how to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy all of the time.
