my hair is dry. its just past my shoulders in length and is black. my ends are so very dry. they are also very split. apart from triming my hair is there any other way of making it un-dry. its texture is coarse and brittley.

You need deep intensive moisturizing regularly. I recommend going to a salon supply store and asking them what they recommend.
I use K-Pak Reconstructor. Once a week, I wash & condition my hair (well I wash my hair more often!), then I comb K-Pak through, wrap it in a towel and leave it like that for an hour, then rinse it.
I NEVER blow dry it, and when coloring it (I don’t know if you color, perm, etc), I NEVER take the coloring down to the tips.
Cutting is a good idea, but if your hair is that brittle and dry, it’ll just continue to split till you fix the problem.

Do a hot oil treatment in your hair, or go to a salon and have them do a deep conditioning treatment on your hair.

Go to a salon. Don’t try to remedy this yourself. I am a licensed cosmetologist and if you’re trimming your own ends etc. or having someone who’s not a professional doing it that may be the problem. Or if you do go to a professional I would really reconsider going to someone else. Your stylist should not only be concerned with the look of your hair but the overall health of your hair and scalp too. It may cost a little more for quality hair care but if you don’t want it to continue to break and be brittle take heed. Also if you swim, use inexpensive shampoo, or shampoo too much these are other problems. Good shampoo may cost a little more but you use a lot less and it will pay off in the long run.
